Steeg Law Firm is proud to shine a spotlight on one of our long-time clients, RaceTrac, Inc.
You recognize the RaceTrac and RaceWay names on its stores in several states, including Louisiana, but you may not know how extensive its reach is. RaceTrac, a family-owned company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, has been in business since 1934. It is the second largest privately held company in Georgia and the 18th largest private company in the United States.
RaceTrac has two divisions, RaceTrac and RaceWay, and three operating companies, Metroplex Energy, Gulf Oil, and Energy Dispatch, that deal with the purchase, sale and distribution of fuel and fuel-related products. It employs over 10,000 people, and has over 800 stores across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. A large percentage of RaceTrac and RaceWay stores are in rural communities of 2,500 to 20,000 people, providing much-needed services and products to otherwise underserved locations.
Featured Products at RaceTrac and RaceWay Stores
RaceTrac and RaceWay locations are about more than filling up your car or truck. Their locations offer a wide selection of food and beverages. In 2023, RaceTrac locations sales included a big variety:
- 28.8 million roller grill items including hot dogs, egg rolls and taquitos – lined up, these items would be over 2.6 miles long, nearly the distance from Miami, Florida, to Seattle, Washington
- 27.9 million cups of Crazy Good Coffee – approximately enough to provide one cup of coffee to each resident of Florida and South Carolina
- 28 million slices of pizza – enough to cover nearly 85 football fields
- 13.6 million fresh food items – approximately enough sandwiches, salads, and parfaits to share with each resident of North Carolina and Mississippi
- 2.4 million whole fruit items – over 46 thousand pieces of fresh fruit each week
- one million gallons of milk – enough milk to fill over 18 thousand average-sized bathtubs
That’s a remarkable volume and variety of food and beverage items to keep your body fueled when you are putting fuel in your vehicle.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
RaceTrac is not all about sales of fuel products and food, though – it also works on efficiency consciousness and sustainability. In 2012, RaceTrac created a special team that focuses on these efforts. Since then, it has saved a lot of energy and water: It uses LED lighting, which has saved 358 million kilowatts across its footprint – enough to power the White House for 422 years. It has energy efficiency projects, saving 30 million kilowatts – enough to power 2,803 single-family homes for a year. RaceTrac has installed smart irrigation equipment, saving 3 million dollars and 594 million gallons of water – enough to fill 806 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It has implemented water usage and leak detection equipment that has saved 2 million dollars and 313 million gallons of water – enough to fill forty-nine Ocean Voyager tanks in RaceTrac’s home state’s Georgia Aquarium.
In addition to these important moves, RaceTrac has so far invested approximately 87 million dollars to support alternative fuels infrastructure at its stores, so that it can offer a variety of renewable fuel blends to its guests, including different ethanol-blend gasolines and electricity charging for electric vehicles.
Giving Back To Communities
RaceTrac is very community-minded, giving back to the public. All RaceTrac stores participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), providing important access to food for hungry people. Since 2011, RaceTrac has raised over 8 million dollars for The Michael J. Fox Foundation, supporting research for a cure to Parkinson’s Disease. Since 2010, RaceTrac has raised 1.2 million dollars for Camp Sunshine in Georgia, to help children with cancer and their families through year-round recreational, educational and support programs. RaceTrac has donated over 225,000 pounds of Food to Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies. In 2023, RaceTrac donated $100,000 to support Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
RaceTrac and RaceWay franchisees at the local level are part of the giving programs, too. Franchisees have donated to and sponsored a variety of local charitable groups and causes, including raising funds for a children’s medical center, holding turkey giveaways during Thanksgiving season, starting a military discount program for active and retired service members, and sponsoring children’s athletic departments and teams.
Business Expansion Planning
In 2024, RaceTrac is planning to invest approximately 352 million dollars across its operating states. Steeg Law Firm is pleased to be a part of those plans.
