Founding Partner, Moise S. Steeg, Jr., was a respected leader in the New Orleans community, receiving many major civic honors, including the Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Services to the Arts in the Community and the New Orleans Times-Picayune Loving Cup Man of the Year Award. Our attorneys continue to follow his lead, serving on the Boards of civic and non-profit organizations, and providing a variety of pro bono legal counsel.
Community Spotlight – The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans
On March 23, 2012 the Preservation Resource Center, an organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic homes and neighborhoods in New Orleans, will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Julia Jump, the organization’s major fundraiser for its longstanding programs and services. The occasion is especially significant for Partner, Randy Opotowsky, who has chaired the PRC’s Operation Comeback Property Advisory Committee since the mid-1980s, was President of the PRC when Hurricane Katrina occurred, and currently serves as its Treasurer.
“Imagine what our city would be like without the French Quarter,” says Mr. Opotowsky. “We would lose the identity and the soul of the city we love. Yet it is not only the Vieux Carre that we work to preserve. We must work hard to reverse the decline in all of our neighborhoods. That is why the PRC works in many ways to create awareness and assist property owners throughout the city. The more we take care of our historic built environment, the prouder we are of our city and the more we benefit from the rich legacy of those who lived here before us.”
After Katrina, Opotowsky sponsored a modular house that was constructed in the classic New Orleans style that enabled the PRC to promote the city’s impressive recovery efforts as well as also contributing to the PRC’s recovery programs. He is a long-time supporter of such PRC events as the Holiday Home Tour, Ladies In Red, and the Julia Jump.
Steeg Law has also been a sponsor of the Holiday Home Tour for many years, and has contributed to the efforts of PRC in many other ways, including assistance in the restoration of vacant and blighted properties in several different neighborhoods.
“I believe that restoration of historic buildings is one of the most important things we can do for our economy here in New Orleans,” says Mr. Opotowsky. “I encourage everyone to learn more about the Preservation Resource Center."
